Mental-health commitment, court order end latest case against Erie animal hoarder

A 70-year-old Erie woman who has been hoarding dogs and cats since 1990 has been indefinitely committed to a mental-health institution, ending the most recent investigation against her for animal cruelty and neglect charges.

Rose Comer had been under investigation after animal-cruelty officers with the Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania found a dog, four cats and two kittens, all infested with fleas, at her apartment in the 700 block of East Eighth Street, according to court records.

Comer shortly before the search had been committed for mental-health treatment, and she is currently at Warren State Hospital, where she is to be treated indefinitely, according to the records....
